It had never occurred to me to go to the Central Park Zoo. I kind of thought there wouldn't be much point in it, as I assumed it was really tiny and only good for families with small children, so never even bothered to look into it.
Well, we happen to be friends with several families with small children, and over the weekend, one of those families invited us to come along to the zoo with them and some others, to celebrate a small child's second birthday. H1 and I don't have kids, but we usually like them okay. Especially the small child in question. She is a two year old with the mind of an eight year old. Going to the zoo with her was bound to be fantastic, no matter its size and the quality of animals within*.
As it happens, though, it turns out the Central Park Zoo is really quite big. I genuinely don't know how they fit it in. Obviously it's still not a huge zoo, but it's definitely respectable, and the animals are cute**! And also well looked after, with enough room - which was my main concern about the size of the zoo.
Child or no***, the zoo is well worth a visit. I haven't been to the Bronx Zoo, so I can't say for sure, but I imagine that if you're holidaying in New York and need to decide on just one zoo, the Bronx Zoo is bigger. If you're living here, or if you're making it a point to check out all Northeastern zoos or something, though, do it!
By the way, I didn't take any of these photos, so thanks to H1 and our friend Mark!
*No giraffes, and giraffes are my favourite. There are snakes, though. Snakes are not my favourite.
**Well, the snakes aren't cute. They're quite interesting, though.
***I'm sure it is more fun with a kid. If you can borrow one, do it.
