One of the peculiar things about New York is that often, a hotel bar is one of the coolest places to be. This is the case in no other city I've ever been in. Have you ever been to another city where hotel bars are frequented predominantly by locals?
Another peculiar thing about New York is that when the sun comes out, a rooftop is one of the best places to be. Maybe it's because they elevate you to a level where the grime and smell can no longer reach you – or maybe it's just because New York looks glorious in the sun, and the best place to appreciate New York is at the top of something tall*.
Most of the rooftop bars in this city belong to hotels, so when you're messaging with your girlfriends about where to spend a glorious June evening, there's every chance these two peculiarities will come together, and result in you ending up somewhere like the Sky Terrace at the Hudson Hotel**.
The Sky Terrace at the Hudson Hotel is overpriced. That's okay. You have to pay a little extra to hang out on a tall rooftop like this. It's also necessary to make a reservation. That's okay too. The waiters and waitresses will probably be better looking than you, and one day you might see them in a film with Leonardo DiCaprio. That's also okay.
Because look at that view.
If you haven't been to a rooftop bar in New York yet, do it. Put a bit of extra cash in your wallet, or brace your credit card, and ride the lift all the way to the top. Sit down, relax, and enjoy your overpriced wine, the view, and the company of some good friends***. This is where New York excels – at the top.
*My advice to all tourists: Go up something tall while you're here. I'm not too fussed on what you choose (although I do recommend Top of the Rock) – just do it.
**Not to be confused with the Hudson Terrace, a bar in Hell's Kitchen that one of our group ended up at. The horrified look on her face when she eventually made it to us indicated to me that it was not as good a place as the Sky Terrace.
***I recommend girlfriends, but a significant other would be a good choice also – just pretend you don't see them checking out the hot waiters/waitresses.
