Express: Glad Rags

I love an excuse to get dressed up, to the degree where I tend to just make them up myself, and wander around New York wearing my party clothes. "It's Tuesday!" I'll cry merrily, donning a tapestry pencil skirt to work from home. Going out for dinner at a favourite neighbourhood local? Definitely an occasion for a one-shouldered silky dress. Putting on an event that will require me to be on my feet all day, running around for 14 hours straight? High heels and sequins it is! It's little wonder that those close to me affectionately* refer to me as the perpetual overdresser.

This means that when an actual genuine opportunity to dress up occurs, I'm thrown headfirst into a maelstrom of delight and planning – as much for the chance to dress up as for the fact that usually, this chance is the result of an awesome celebration. This was most certainly the case recently, when H1 and I attended the engagement party of our good friends**.

I originally planned to wear a new and amazing pair of suede shoes with this dress, but the rain put paid to that idea. However, a simple pair of patent leather heels worked well (and were water-resistant also). I had just had my hair lopped off***, so the slight 1920s feeling of this outfit was a happy coincidence, played up a little when I noticed both my hair and dress fit the theme. Clearly, the Gatsby**** love is having an effect on my subconscious.

When was the last time you dressed up – and was it for genuine reasons, or, like, Wednesday?

*It's definitely with affection. I think. I'm pretty sure.

**Yes, the same one where a ballgown was politely rejected by them.

***Shorter than I was thinking when I walked into the hairdressers, but I'm glad I was brave and did something different for once.

****I haven't even seen it yet!
