Over the weekend, H1 and I headed down to Tribeca and Battery Park City for a walk along the waterfront and lunch alfresco. It was with much glee that I pulled one of my favourite weekend dresses out of the wardrobe, safe in the knowledge that it was warm enough to wear it, and that I had fake-tanned my legs the day before for just this occasion.
When it came time to go, however, I hesitated. The main purpose of going out was for a walk, so heels were going to be a bad idea. BUT, heels are undoubtedly the most flattering shoes to wear with most dresses. There's a reason they exist. I tentatively picked up a pair of wedges, which can really be quite comfortable if you're in the right mood, took one look at H1's unimpressed face, and went for a pair of sneakers instead. Doing the sensible thing - ah, ageing, you strike again!
I was glad I had chosen sneakers after traipsing my way down the crowded streets of Tribeca. There was a family festival on, and small children filled the neighbourhood, running and playing and having fun with little regard for anyone's feet. And of course, the walking was much easier.
The sneakers I wore were American classics - Keds - in a not-so-classic shade of coral. They are perfect weekend shoes - comfortable, casual, and cute enough for most weekend occasions. Jessica Wakefield wore Keds. Enough said, right?
Whether you can wear a dress with sneakers really depends on the dress, of course, but is this something everyone else has been doing for ages, that I've only just caught on to? Share your dress/flat secrets, please!
